The program will take place on three consecutive Tuesday evenings, March 6, 13 and 20, 2018. The theme of Solidarity provides a robust and useful understanding of the social obligation of individuals, communities, institutions and nations (from United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) on Catholic Social Teaching). We will focus on the Migration issue.

The program will contain guest speakers, group discussions, video, a short reading assignment and an action-oriented workshop.
Registration is encouraged due to limited space and a short reading assignment before program begins. Cost is $10.00. Students are free. Scholarships are available.

Spend some time this Lent with Fr. Henri Nouwen and his famous book, “The Return of the Prodigal Son.”

Henri Nouwen was one of the most famous and prolific Catholic spiritual authors in the 20th Century. In this deeply personal meditation, inspired by Rembrandt’s painting of the same name, Nouwen discusses themes such as homecoming, affirmation, and reconciliation and the challenge to love as the father and be loved as the son as recorded in Luke’s Gospel parable.

This short but profound book is a perfect companion for Lent.
Contact Monica Coyle by Wed Feb 14th for details mgcoyle@verizon.net if you are interested in joining this book club.

Thursday, February 8: “The Sultan and the Saint”

“The Sultan and the Saint” is a movie that tells one of the great, lost
stories from history. This film tells the story of St. Francis of
Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt, and their encounter on a bloody
battlefield during the Fifth Crusade in 1219. These two men of
faith, one an itinerant Christian preacher, the other the ruler of a
Muslim Empire, resisted a century of war, distrust, and insidious
propaganda in a search for mutual respect and common ground.
Not only does it speak directly to the conflicts of today, the story
itself is very dramatic with many fascinating twists and turns, and
with central characters who are more compelling than even their
legends claim.

The movie and discussion of it will be held in

Downey Hall from 7:30 to 9:00 PM.

Saturday, March 10: “A Retreat with St. Joseph for Men”

Time: 8:30 to Noon
Place: Spina Hall

For most men, the three most challenging roles are those as father, husband and worker. This morning of reflection is designed for the men of St. Mary’s and will consider St. Joseph as a model for all three of these roles. Three speakers will lead this morning of reflection to help men think about how to live out their Christian vocation with St. Joseph as their guide. Stephen Kass, Jeff Schiefelbein and Fr. Larry Anderson, OFM, will serve as speakers and facilitators for this morning of reflection. Steve is the Director of Adult Faith at St. Mary’s. He holds an MA in Theology from Seton Hall University. Jeff is on the national board of Young Catholic Professional and hosts his own radio program on the Guadalupe Radio network. Fr Larry works for Campus Ministries at Siena College and served as an Associate Pastor at St Mary’s.

As you are probably aware, church attendance during
the summer months tends to drop off as vacations and
weekend sporting events often conflict. On the other hand,
the services we provide within the parish and for the larger
community continue year round, as do their associated
expenses. Thus, your consistent financial support of our
parish is vital to achieving our stewardship mission.
The easiest way to be sure that your gift of treasure reaches
us, even when you can’t be here, is through enrollment in our
electronic offertory program: Faith Direct. If you have not
yet enrolled, please consider doing so this month.

Enroll today!   www.faithdirect.net and use our parish code NJ23.

Thank you in advance for your support and for using Faith Direct!
