Greetings from Fr Gonzalo
Greetings from Fr Gonzalo
Greetings from Fr Gonzalo

Dear Saint Mary’s Family,

My beloved sisters and brothers:

This is a difficult month for all of us who love our country, as we remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001. We are united in prayer for all those who lost their lives that day. We also pray for those suffering the consequences of the hurricanes that have devastated the southern part of our nation. Every day, we are reminded how blessed we are at St. Mary’s. Every blessing we have is a direct result of our faith, our community and our life as Disciples of Christ.

As we continue our mission as Franciscan disciples, I appeal to your generosity to help us reach the goal for our Annual Fund. So far, this year 513 people have made a gift toward our goal of $250,000, and so far we have raised $182,947.00. This annual fund is vital to the operation of the parish and it helps to accomplish the many things that we might not otherwise be able to do.  If you have already given, thank you very much.   If you've never made a gift to the Annual Fund, or if it's been a while since your last gift, I ask that you consider a gift of $25 or more this year. Giving details can be found by following the link below.

Thanks to your generous sharing of God’s blessing, we can support our ministries. For instance, our Special Needs Ministry, serves approximately 150 adults and 100 children. It is overseen by Liz Schoonmaker, our Special Needs Ministry Director. The children participate in Religious Education, Communion and Confirmation classes. These classes are taught by Kassie Pierinelli, our new Special Needs Religious Education Teacher. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to offer social functions to the children. That would be a full-time position. The adults enjoy the social functions that we offer. The Knights of Columbus and other dedicated volunteers help at the dinner dances, serving food, having fun with the guests and cleaning up. There are usually about 120-150 people at these events.

May our Lord continue to bless us with His Generosity and Love!

Your brother and servant in Christ in the spirit of Francis of Assisi,

Padre Gonzalo

Let's welcome our new friar Fr. Barry Langley
Let's welcome our new friar Fr. Barry Langley, OFM
Let's welcome our new friar Fr. Barry Langley, OFM Former lawyer, self-professed cook, and priest, Fr. Barry Langley, OFM, celebrated 25 years as a friar in 2017. In 1988, he professed his first vows as a friar in Brookline, Mass. With a bachelor’s degree in history from American University in Washington, Barry did his theological studies at Washington Theological Union and also took classes in religion at St. John’s University in New York City. He became a deacon in 1994 at the National Shrine in Washington, and ordained later that year at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Manhattan. His first assignment was as pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Wilmington, Del., where he also served as assistant director of the Franciscan Center. St. Joseph’s is a diverse inner-city parish that the Franciscans took over from the Josephites, an order that served African Americans. During his 11 years in Wilmington, Barry also attended summer programs at the Institute for Black Catholic Study at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, where he said he took enough courses to almost qualify for a master’s degree. “It was a great way of understanding how to minister at St. Joseph’s.”For five years, he served as chairman of the board of St. Francis Hospital, the area’s Catholic hospital. In 2005, when Holy Name Province was taking over Sacred Heart Church in Tampa., Fla., from the Jesuits, Barry, who had experience in church transitions, was sent to help. He served as parochial vicar there for two years, but missed the change of seasons enough to request assignment back up north. “Lack of winter didn’t sit well with me,” he said with a smile. He spent the next eight months as parochial vicar at St. Francis of Assisi Parish on the Jersey Shore community of Long Beach Island, and then asked to go to St. Anthony Shrine. “I wanted to work in a service church,” he said. Serving at the Shrine Barry was no stranger to Boston, having lived at the shrine during his internship as a financial advocate with AIDS Action Committee. His ministry at the shrine for the past six years has been diverse. In addition to saying Mass, hearing confessions, and providing spiritual direction, Barry oversaw several shrine programs. He coordinates the seniors program, Seniors on Arch Street, which provides light exercise, speakers and presentations, crafts, trips, games and a hot meal after Wednesday Mass. He also directed Tony’s Travelers, which manages day trips, and is the friar liaison with the 20s/30s Boston, the young adult ministry, and the Lazarus program, which reaches out to bury the homeless and abandoned babies in the Boston area. “My life as a friar was confirmed in finding the Franciscans, where I found home and a big welcome and that continues to be the case. I find great joy living this life with the brothers.” “I enjoy being a part of Holy Name Province for many reasons, but mainly because of the diversity of ministries offered. This makes it interesting. We can do a variety of things.” Barry said he would like to be remembered as an open-hearted and caring person.” Fr. Barry will land into Saint Mary’s on September 6, 2017.
US Franciscans Statement
US Franciscans Statement
US Franciscans Statement September 5, 2017

As leaders and members of the Franciscan Order in the United States, we object in strenuous terms to the decision of President Donald Trump to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). This decision constitutes a rejection of the 2012 executive order by President Barack Obama that allowed young immigrants, who were brought to the United States by their parents, to seek the opportunity to realize their full potential. President Obama’s executive order was not only moral, it also responded to the highest ideals of our nation.

The 780,000 “dreamers” (those who have received deferred action) are good, generous, talented and hard-working individuals. Many of them we know personally in and through our various Franciscan ministries. We have celebrated the DACA program with them as a modern response to the Biblical imperative to “welcome the stranger.” Now, after President Trump’s decision to end the executive action, we commit ourselves to stand in support of and solidarity with “dreamers.”

We urge all members of the communities we serve to condemn this unnecessary and harmful order by President Trump. Furthermore, we call upon all to contact their members of Congress and urge them to pass legislation that will fully welcome “dreamers” to our nation, remove the permanent shadow of their temporary status and make it illegal to deport or harm them. We join the U.S. Catholic Bishops in advocating for the bi-partisan “Dream Act of 2017,” H.R.3440 and S. 1615. This legislation can help “dreamers” receive a piece of the security and human dignity they and all people deserve.

Unless a permanent legislative solution is enacted that welcomes and fully incorporates the young men and women “dreamers” who are already a vibrant part of our communities, our society will take yet another step on the path of moral and social decline.

At Saint Mary’s we are extremely blessed with a great variety of
people, gifts, needs and passions. We encounter our Lord daily
as we rejoice, suffer and journey with each person that the Lord
sends our way. As a community of faith, we have done much for
each other. However, we can never take for granted our mission
as disciples. Each day is a new opportunity to be the hands and
feet of Jesus Christ here on earth in this little corner of the world
we call Pompton Lakes.

Every day there are sisters and brothers who come to us looking
for food, shelter and other needs that require the assistance of
a social worker. We do our best, with ministries like the Food
Pantry, Pathways, Stephen Ministries and the direct outreach of
the friars. Unfortunately, in some cases, this help is not enough.

We are looking for volunteer social workers who wish to donate
a few hours of their time to serve our parish in this ministry.

Dear Saint Mary’s Social Worker: Our Lord has given you
special gifts; please share them with those in need!

Are you tech savvy? Specifically with video recording and editing? If your eyebrows twitched at the thought.... the parish needs you! We are creating a team to record and edit video of different aspects of the parish. We will need to create a "St. Marys" video lead-in as well! The Team will be working with parishioners, ministries, friars and staff. Knowledge of YouTube and forms of social media are awesome! Bringing new ideas to the project.... woohoo! Honestly, we need you.  Please contact us if you have some time and would like to be apart of a new creative project.

Thanks be to God for your compassionate hearts!

Your brother and servant in Christ in the spirit of Francis of Assisi,
Padre Gonzalo

Films of Faith “The Shack”
September, Sunday 17 at 7 PM in the Conference Room
Based on the best-selling novel, the Shack takes us on a father’s transformative spiritual journey. After a family tragedy, Mark spirals into a crisis of faith and questions God’s existence and life’s purpose. Mark is unable to move on until he gets a mysterious invitation to an abandoned shack. There God reveals himself in the form of three strangers. Mark’s journey will speak to each person in different ways much the same as each of our journeys are different.

“We Have A Table for 4 Ready”
Thursday, October 5 at 7 PM in the Conference Room
On this week of celebrating our Franciscan heritage you are invited to view this story of St. Francis Inn in Kensington, Philadelphia. The Inn is a ministry of Holy Name Province and feeds about 300 people every day. The video invites us into a joyful community in the midst of urban poverty. The friars, sisters and volunteers who choose to live among the poorest of the poor, find deep meaning in the Gospel paradox that asks why are there some who have so much and others who have so little.

“Luther”
Sunday, October 29 at 7 PM in the Conference Room
This Sunday is called Reformation Sunday. Throughout the world we will celebrate the 500th year anniversary of Luther’s break from the Catholic Church. The video is a bio-epic about the life of Martin Luther …

As you are probably aware, church attendance during
the summer months tends to drop off as vacations and
weekend sporting events often conflict. On the other hand,
the services we provide within the parish and for the larger
community continue year round, as do their associated
expenses. Thus, your consistent financial support of our
parish is vital to achieving our stewardship mission.
The easiest way to be sure that your gift of treasure reaches
us, even when you can’t be here, is through enrollment in our
electronic offertory program: Faith Direct. If you have not
yet enrolled, please consider doing so this month.

Enroll today!   www.faithdirect.net and use our parish code NJ23.
