St. Mary's Religious Education/Sacrament Prep Grades 7-10

This page contains information about religious education for grades 7/8 and information about sacramental preparation for Confirmation grades 9/10.

On line registration for Religious Education and Sacramental Prep ends Friday, September 18th. See below for info!

GENERAL INFO FOR SEPTEMBER 15, 22 and 29, 2020 CONFIRMATION CEREMONY

Our new Pastor Father Frances Critch will be the presider for the 9/15/2020 Ceremony
Our new Bishop Kevin Sweeney will be the presider for the 9/22 and 9/29 Ceremonies

Based on the state mandate, only 125 people will be allowed in the church. That limits those with access to the church to only candidates, sponsors, staff and clergy. Family and friends can watch the live stream on personal devices in their cars in the parking lot or at home. I am aware this very disappointing, but let’s seize the moment and let the Holy Spirit guide us in making this the true celebration of life that it is!

To that end, we will be having a pre-ceremony celebration in the parking lot. (Think a Jets tail gating party without the alcohol, food and sad losses). We are asking candidates and families to decorate their cars (like how high school seniors decorate their cars as graduation approaches). Remember the color of the day is RED! Father John will be live streaming the pre-ceremony welcome and the procession of the candidates and sponsors from the parking lot and into the church. A welcoming group will be there to greet you. Remember to pickup your name tag when you check in!

Once inside the church, the ceremony will continue to be lived streamed. As you know, a Confirmation ceremony is a mass with the Rite of Confirmation taking place between the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. If you want to receive the Eucharist, turn on your car headlights when the Eucharistic Ministers arrive in the parking lot.

We are working with the Bishop’s office about still pictures. We are hoping that at the end of the ceremony the Bishop will allow us safely take pictures of him with the candidate and sponsor. We would then make them available to you. You will be advised when we get the Bishop’s response.

Check out the attachments, let me know about any questions and concerns. Take you for patience and understanding. And stay safe and keep the faith!

 2020-2021 REGISTRATION FAQ'S

St. Mary's School has shut down. Does that include all religious education?  Sadly, the school is closing its doors this year and we ask you to keep the school families and faculty in your prayers. BUT the parish religious education program is and will continue to be open and ministering to all of the parish families.

I heard Confirmation is received in the 8th grade. Is that true? Not at St. Mary's. Confirmation preparation for St. Mary's starts in a candidate's freshman year of high school and continues through their sophomore year. The ceremony takes place in the spring of their sophomore year.

Why aren't grades 1-6 mentioned here? When our superhero Director of Religious Education(DRE) grades 1-5, Alma Banta, retired, it was decided to add grades 6-8 to the new DRE's responsibilities. Honestly, it was too much. We have hundreds of children in the program so a redistribution of the workload was initiated last year. The Coordinator of Confirmation, Pat Newton, who works in the Youth Ministry department, was given grades 7 and 8 in addition to the Confirmation grades 9 and 10.Our DRE, Toni Wong, is responsible for grades 1-6. While we have separate web pages and departments, we have worked to coordinate our schedules and meeting times. Need to reach Mrs. Wong? Call her at 973-835-7750 x 102.

When do Religious Education classes start?  We have 2 semesters, Fall and Spring. All classes/meetings will be virtual via ZOOM. On line registration opens by July 22 for all grades 1-10. The on line registration closes on Friday, September 18th.After that date you can register in person at the Religious Education building and a $25.00 late fee may be assessed. You can register on line here .

  • 8th grade and Confirmation Phase 2 (10th grade) attend in the Fall. The Fall semester starts 10/4/2020 and ends 12/19/2020. There are no classes/meetings the week of November 22nd.
  • 7th grade and Confirmation Phase 1 (9th grade) attend in the Spring. The Spring semester starts 1/10/2021 and ends 3/25/2021. There are no classes/meetings the week of February 14th.
