WHAT IS THE SAINTSATIONALS REQUIREMENT?

In September of 2017 the Most Reverend Arthur J. Serratelli, Bishop of Paterson established a Basic Required Content for Candidates of Confirmation. This Content contains a list of 67 questions from the Baltimore Catechism. Bishop Serratelli rightly explains that “As bishop, I want every young Catholic in our diocese to know and to internalize the basics of our faith in such a way that they are able to express in the common language of faith what the Church believes.”

If the term Baltimore Catechism is new to you, Wikipedia describes it as “A Catechism of Christian Doctrine, Prepared and Enjoined by Order of the Third Council of Baltimore, or simply the Baltimore Catechism, was the official national catechism for children in the United States of America, based on Robert Bellarmine's 1614 Small Catechism. The first such catechism written for Catholics in North America, it was the standard Catholic school text in the country from 1885 to the late 1960s. It was officially replaced by the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults in 2004, based on the revised universal Catechism of the Catholic Church.”

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE CONFIRMATION CANDIDATE AND FAMILY?

Embracing the Bishop’s request we will incorporate into our lesson plans a module called SAINTSATIONALS.

  • Homework: Each week a list of 6-9 questions will be emailed to the candidates for them to study at home during the week. These questions will also be listed on the Confirmation webpage. The goal is to memorize the questions and the answers
  • Classwork: After taking attendance each group will be given a few minutes of additional review of the questions and answers.
    • At some point in your meeting the Confirmation coordinator or her representative will come to your group to ask the questions of the week.
    • Anyone can volunteer to answer a question ONCE. If no one volunteers the coordinator will call on some one.
    • If the candidate answers the question correctly they will get a SAINTSATIONAL CARD to keep and their group will score a point. Once a group reaches 20 correct answers they will win an ice cream party for the group.
