Justice Walking: A Justice Program for Teens
Justice Walking is about linking the Youth and Social Justice ministries in their efforts to engage teens who wish to take their faith to a deeper level - It is not about walking marathons. They meet over three months from mid-January to mid-April every other week. This group marks the third year of this program at St. Mary's.
The agency they work closely with is Straight and Narrow. Straight and Narrow's purpose is to rehabilitate clients who are dealing with substance abuse issues.
The group in the picture above is the Justice Walking Team for 2011. They visited Straight & Narrow in Paterson, NJ every other week over a two month period. They interacted directly with the resident clients. The teens learned about justice issues that have led the clients to Straight & Narrow, such as poverty, family addiction and prevalence of drugs in our community. Alternately they meet at St. Mary's to process their visits. They also learn about Catholic Social Teachings, tools for social analysis and group bonding.
