Infant Baptism Guidelines
Thank you for choosing St. Mary’s Catholic Church to baptize your child. The Rite of Baptism for Children includes these words, "The Christian community welcomes you with great joy." It is also with great joy that St. Mary's helps parents prepare for the Baptism of their child. In presenting your child for Baptism, you seek to foster a permanent connection between your child and Christ within the Christian community. No matter how close or distant your own relationship with God, the new life of your child has stirred a desire in you to seek Baptism for him or her. In this Sacrament, the Catholic community of St. Mary’s promises to walk beside you in nurturing the faith of your child.

Age:

1. The child must be under the age of 7.
2. If the child is over the age of 7, s/he will need to complete the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) process. Therefore, parents must contact our Director of Religious Education (973-835-0374 ext. 102)

Documents:

1. COPY of the Birth Certificate of the child to be baptized
2. Completed Baptism intake sheet.

Baptism Preparation Class:

If this is your first time presenting a child for Baptism, it is a requirement of the Diocese of Paterson that both parents and godparents participate in one Baptism preparation session prior to your child's Baptism.
1. At St. Mary’s: The preparation session usually takes place the fourth Monday of the month. If you have already had a child baptized at St. Mary's, you need not attend the preparation session again.
2. Outside of St. Mary’s: If you attend a Baptism preparation class at a Catholic parish other than St. Mary’s, you must provide the Baptismal preparation class certificate from the Parish where you took the class.

Godparents:

1. Must be sixteen years old or older
2. One Godparent MUST be a baptized and confirmed Catholic.
3. Non-Christians cannot serve as sponsors for Baptism, since they are not baptized.
4. Only 2 Godparents will appear on the baptismal certificate.
5. We do not require any paperwork from the godparents as to their faith or standing. We trust the parents’ ability to make good decisions for their children.

Baptism Schedule:
Once St. Mary’s receives all paperwork the Baptism will be scheduled.
No Baptism will be scheduled until all documents are received.
Since the Sacrament of Baptism is a Sacrament of Initiation, we invite the parents to celebrate their child’s baptism during one of our Masses, so the parish community may rejoice with the family. When we baptize a child, the Church rejoices because we have welcomed a new member. Therefore, since the Sacrament of Baptism is communal in nature, we do not offer private baptisms except in special circumstances approved by the Pastor. We do limit the number of children being baptized at each celebration.
During Any Mass: Saturday: 5:00 & 7:00 PM
Sundays: 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 10:30 (Family Mass in the Carnevale Center), 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM

Group Baptisms:
Most Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 PM

The Church does not permit the celebration of Baptism within the Mass during the seasons of Advent and Lent.
