February 2018 Events

Thursday, February 8:

“The Sultan and the Saint”

Time: 7:30 to 9:00 PM/Place: Downey Hall

The “Sultan and the Saint” is a movie that tells one of the great, lost stories from history. This film tells the story of St. Francis of Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt, and their encounter during the Fifth Crusade in 1219. These two men of faith, one an itinerant Christian preacher, the other the ruler of a Muslim
Empire, resisted a century of war, distrust, and insidious propaganda in a search for common ground. Not only does it speak directly to the conflicts of today, the story itself is very dramatic with many fascinating twists and turns. This evening will be hosted by Fr. Joe Nangle, OFM, who is an author and with the Franciscan Mission Service in Washington DC.

Tuesday, February 20:

“Amazed and Afraid”

Time: 7:30 to 9:00 PM/Place: Conference Room

The strange and dangerous words of Jesus in Mark 10:32 set up a drama that will culminate in a surprising battle between two kings, and in the wake of this conflict, an empire will be defeated – and the world will be changed.

In the first episode of the acclaimed “Catholicism” video series, Bishop Robert Barron illuminates and explains the conviction of the Catholic Faith that Jesus is the promised

Messiah, and the revelation of God become man. This video shows how Jesus fulfills the four tasks of the Messiah, according to the Old and New Testaments, and how the living legacy of Christ, God and Messiah, is proclaimed by the Church. Join this video presentation and conversation around some of the most controversial questions about the life and identity of Jesus Christ.
