St. Mary's Parish in Pompton Lakes New Jersey, within the Diocese of Paterson is a unique Christian community, rooted in the Catholic and Franciscan traditions. Here religious and laity strive to be equal partners in ministry.

St. Mary's Parish celebrated its 100th anniversary this year by charting a "new era" for the dynamic Franciscan faith community with a new staff for its nationally recognized youth ministry, the recent expansion of its social ministry and the opening of its new $3 million faith-formation center this fall.

Faith formation center at Pompton Lakes parish three years in the making
dream has come true at St. Mary Parish here with the completion of its new Father Michael Carnevale Faith Formation Center that will provide a place for the faith community's more than 75 ministries to meet and gather together. Under sunny skies, the building's dedication was held Oct. 7 with more than a thousand people in attendance including retired Bishop Frank Rodimer, who blessed and dedicated the center, and Franciscan Father Michael Carnevale, the former pastor, for whom the building is named.

As head of the social justice ministry at St. Mary's Church in Pompton Lakes, N.J., Jackie Schramm employs church teachings to tackle such issues as poverty, immigrant rights and racism. Recently, she began conducting a weekly church program - Just Faith - aimed at inspiring laypeople to develop a passion for those issues. She spoke about the church's social justice mission.
