Act 19 #Local

GREEN OPTION:
What and who needs you to be on time today? Make sure you arrive/deliver/respond on time. (And if you've arranged to meet a friend today, avoid the 'running a few minutes late' text by setting out ten minutes before you need to.)

YELLOW OPTION:
How about being early? Send what you need to send before the deadline, arrive early to greet your colleagues before work today, arrive early to catch friends when you hang out with them. And so on.

RED OPTION:
Early AND organised? Arrive early to that meeting or get-together, organise the room if it needs it, get the refreshments in, and sort out everyone's favourite treat. You never know, you might make their day.

Do you ever feel as if you’ve settled
into a sort of spiritual lethargy?
Pope Francis has said,
“Lent comes . . . to reawaken us, to shake us from our lethargy."
If you’ve ever felt like this, and if you’d like to spend at least part of the upcoming Lenten season shaking off that lethargy, consider spending four Tuesday evenings in Lent with a group of us who plan to combine the inspiration of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si – On Care for Our Common Home with a special 2016 National Geographic video, ‘Before the Flood.’ Drawing insight and creativity from both of these, we’ll focus on the importance, even the obligation, to do everything we can to keep our land, air, and water healthy and to examine how inequality plays into the subject.
During the four-weeks, we will explore together the issues that confront us to maintaining healthy air, food, and water. We’ll discuss various actions we might take as a group and as individuals to shake off that lethargy once and for all.
This 4-week program is being presented by two St. Mary’s ministries – Franciscan Response to Fracking and Advocates for Justice. Because this series involves a group process, we request that you commit to the four weeks if you register to attend.

If you’d like more information or would like to register
(so we know how many to prepare for),
please contact Jackie at  jschramm@stmarys-pompton.org

Lenten questions - Week 2
Lenten questions - Week 2
Lenten questions - Week 2 Jesus is transfigured.

How is Christ calling me to change from being comfortable in
my life to Gospel service?

We all have our comfort zones and it’s
hard for all of us to break out of them. But sometimes in order to
answer the call of discipleship and truly serve the community, we
do have to break out of our comfort zones. As you contemplate
your comfort zone and how you can break out of it for Gospel
service, ask God to give you the strength you need to do what you
are called to do.

Do Lent Generously
SERVE
SERVE
During the season of Lent, the entire Parish will be using
the theme of SERVE throughout our liturgies and
ministry programming. To move the theme beyond words,
the Parish of St. Mary's is going to participate in 40acts.
40acts is a generosity challenge which encourages
participants to do at least one different act of kindness each
day of Lent. Most are quite simple!
Small deeds to change our world.
The challenges, beginning on
 March 1, Ash Wednesday,
will be posted on the St. Mary's Facebook page
and this Website!
Help us join a movement of giving back, doing good
and living generously.
Operation Starfish
Operation Starfish
Operation Starfish While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.

He came closer still and called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”

The old man smiled, and said, “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?”

To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “But, young man, do you not realise that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”

The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”

The tradition of Operation Starfish
continues as we reflect
on the belief that almsgiving isn’t
about the size or
amount of the gift.
Each gift—big or small—is important!
Thank you for your generosity!
