Did you know that on April 14 we observed Equal Pay Day? This date was chosen because, on that day, women’s earnings finally catch up to men’s earnings from the previous year.

Women's Rights Team
Did you know that on April 14 we observed Equal Pay Day? This date was chosen because, on that day, women’s earnings finally catch up to men’s earnings from the previous year.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau report entitled Income and Poverty in the United States, “on average, women who work full-time, earn 78 cents for every dollar a full-time male worker earns”.

This inequity exists at all pay and salary levels. It occurs even when comparing a woman’s salary to a man’s for a job requiring the same level of knowledge and skill and for jobs, such as nursing, that are traditionally female dominated. It exists even though women are almost half the workforce and the equal, if not main, breadwinner in four out of ten families.

While this social justice topic is still timely, please take time to educate yourself on this issue. To begin the process you can visit www.aauw.org and www.iwpr.org/initiatives/pay-equity-and-discrimination

As part of your discerning process the Women’s Rights Team challenges you to identify how you feel about this issue within the context of the Catholic Church’s social justice teaching.

“The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected--the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions, to private property, and to economic initiative.”

The paragraph above is a direct quote from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ web site. To further explore what the Church has to say on this topic go to http://bit.ly/1HbOCap

In future bulletin articles the WRT will present a series of social justice issues that affect women and currently need our attention and action. We will ask you to do research, form opinions and identify possible action steps to fight the injustices.

As always, please contact us with your ideas, concerns or questions at  (973) 653-9728 or Women's Rights Team

Lay Franciscans
Lay Franciscans
St. Francis welcomed lay people into the Franciscan family and wrote a rule from which they could draw inspiration and order for their Franciscan life. They were originally called Brothers and Sisters of Penance and later The Third Order.

For nearly 800 years, Lay Catholics have made a life commitment and become members of what is now called The Secular Franciscan Order [“secular” meaning we are embedded in the world]. There are some 15,000 Catholic Secular Franciscans in the U.S. and about 400,000 around the world.
Men and women of St. Mary’s fraternity of seculars meet
once a month, usually the second Tuesday - join us. All are
welcome!

Prayer Shawls Available
Prayer Shawls Available
These garments
continue to be symbolic of unconditional love and
embrace each and every recipient with hope and love in
good and bad times. For all of us involved in this thriving
ministry, we each feel blessed and a sense of peace while
making these garments. We are grateful that we are able
to continue with this wonderful ministry.
The dedicated women of the shawl ministry meet every
month; their next meeting is Wednesday, February 11,
in the Carnevale Center, Room 201 @ 7 PM.
Anyone who crochets or knits is welcome. If you have
any questions or would like to give or get a shawl, please
contact the Parish Office and leave a message for the
Shawl Ministry 973.835.0374.

smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment,
or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the
potential to turn a life around." Leo Buscaglia

Franciscan Challenge
THE FRANCISCAN FRIARS OF THE HOLY NAME PROVINCE
THE FRANCISCAN FRIARS OF THE HOLY NAME PROVINCE Dear Community of St. Mary’s,
Your warm welcome for me as I came to speak to you about our annual Franciscan Challenge this past weekend was another example of the wonderful Franciscan hospitality for which you are known.
Your care and support of the Franciscan Friars who serve you now, and those to come in the future, is evidence of the love you have for those who have served in the past.
Thank you for your participation in our Provincial fundraising event. Your gift ensures that the Franciscan spirit will endure in our world and in our church.
Thank you for being a true instrument of peace to all the Friars and to those we serve.
A very special thanks also to Fr. Frank and all the Friars of the parish for sharing their home with me in a wonderful, fraternal way.

Many blessings,
Fr. David Convertino, OFM
