Introduction to the Bible with Fr. Larry Hayes, OFM Introduction to the Bible with Fr. Larry Hayes, OFM
How do we as Catholic Christians approach the Bible? Why is it such an important book for us? Who wrote it and how did it get its final form? Why were additional gospels and other available writings NOT included in the Bible? Who determined the final contents? What kinds of writing are found in the Bible? How do Catholics interpret the Bible? How does Catholic Biblical interpretation differ from Biblical fundamentalism and literalism?

Introduction to the Bible with Fr. Larry Hayes, OFM Introduction to the Bible with Fr. Larry Hayes, OFM
How do we as Catholic Christians approach the Bible? Why is it such an important book for us? Who wrote it and how did it get its final form? Why were additional gospels and other available writings NOT included in the Bible? Who determined the final contents? What kinds of writing are found in the Bible? How do Catholics interpret the Bible? How does Catholic Biblical interpretation differ from Biblical fundamentalism and literalism?

These are just some of the questions that we will explore in a seven-week Bible study at St. Mary’s. This study will make the Bible more understandable and user-friendly for newcomers and experienced Bible students alike. It will also give you a chance to share with other parishioners.

We will use the Little Rock Scripture Study course that includes a book, reflection questions to share in our sessions, and a short wrap-up video for each session. There will be seven sessions, on Tuesday evenings from 7:30 – 9:00 PM in the Banta Room, beginning on August 28, 2018 and ending on October 16, 2018 (no class on September 18).

Registration is required and the class will be limited to 35 participants. Deadline for registering is August 13. Cost (to cover materials) will be $20.

Register here.

Bus Trip to Ordination
Join us for John Aherne's Ordination
Join us for John Aherne's Ordination This summer John Aherne, OFM, will be joining our St Mary’s family! His ordination will be held at 11AM on June 23 at St. Francis of Assisi Church on West 31st Street, NYC. St Francis is the headquarters for Holy Name Province to which we friars belong and where all our major celebrations take place. It is a beautiful church.

We would love to have a welcoming delegation from St Mary’s at the ordination and we are arranging for one coach bus to transport anyone who wishes to attend. The bus holds 49 people and will leave at 8:30AM on Saturday, June 23 and return to St Mary’s around 3:30PM. The cost is $25 per person and it will be filled on a “first-come, first-served” basis. So, if you want to go and not have to worry about traffic and parking,
sign up HERE or the Parish Office.

John is the second of four children, and was raised in Maspeth, Queens by Daniel and Bridget Aherne, both natives of Ireland. After graduating from New York University with degrees in English Literature and Anthropology, John worked as a book editor in New York City and ran an Irish Dancing School before joining the Friars in 2010. He enjoys reading, running, crossword puzzles, and spending time with his nieces and nephews.

As you are probably aware, church attendance during
the summer months tends to drop off as vacations and
weekend sporting events often conflict. On the other hand,
the services we provide within the parish and for the larger
community continue year round, as do their associated
expenses. Thus, your consistent financial support of our
parish is vital to achieving our stewardship mission.
The easiest way to be sure that your gift of treasure reaches
us, even when you can’t be here, is through enrollment in our
electronic offertory program: Faith Direct. If you have not
yet enrolled, please consider doing so this month.

Enroll today!   www.faithdirect.net and use our parish code NJ23.

Thank you in advance for your support and for using Faith Direct!
