St. Mary's Parish in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey within the diocese of Paterson
is a unique Christian Community
rooted in the Catholic and Franciscan traditions.
Here religious and laity strive to be equal partners in ministry. We seek to live and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We welcome, celebrate and nourish
one another through
outreach, evangelization and
joy-filled worship.

Why Towels?
“Jesus took a towel and tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciple’s feet and dry them with the towel around his waist.”
Our celebration of the Paschal Triduum [Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday] is the mot important thing we do as Christians. Our entire faith is based on these three days and the wonderful mysteries that are unveiled for us. In reality, these days are not three, but one continuous celebration of the one paschal mystery.
Again this year on Holy Thursday, we will have a collection of new bath towels. In remembrance of the day when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, we will collect towels which will be distributed to our needy brothers and sisters.
As you come to the Holy Thursday celebration, towels can be placed in the baskets by the candle racks on either side of church.
Thank you for your generosity!

A free viewing of the 2014 movie GMO OMG will be presented by St. Mary’s Advocates For Justice and Kinnelon Conserves on Tuesday, April 7 at 7:00 pm in the Carnevale Center Hall. Discussion will follow screening. For more information or to rsvp please call Jackie at 973-835- 0734, ext 191 or email at jschramm@stmarys-pompton.org
• How do GMOs affect our children, the health of our planet, and our freedom of choice?
• Is it even possible to reject the food system currently in place, or have we lost something we can’t gain back?
These and other questions take Director Seifert on a journey from his family’s table to Haiti, Paris, Norway, and the lobby of agri-giant Monsanto, from which he is unceremoniously ejected. Along the way we gain insight into a question that is of growing concern to citizens the world over: What's on your plate? - See more at: http://www.gmofilm.com

The Book of Genesis - Presenter: Fr. Joe

The Joy of the Gospel - Presenter: Fr. Joe
Joy of the Gospel is Pope Francis’ first apostolic exhortation: “The joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ, joy is constantly born anew. In this Exhortation, I wish to encourage the faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.”
Come, let us read, study and pray how we can become better evangelizers of the gospel. Two classes on Thursdays:
8:00 - 9:30 AM in CC 203 and 204 [February 19 and 26]
7:00 - 8:30 PM in Catherine Spina Hall [March 5, 12 and 19]

Lost Angels Bereavement Support Group
The loss of a loved one forever changes us. When experiencing the tragedy of a child’s death from drugs and alcohol, parents and loved ones often find themselves isolated and confused.

Lost Angels Bereavement Support Group— Lost Angels offers support, understanding, compassion and hope to bereaved parents, grandparents and siblings struggling to rebuild their lives after the death of children, grandchildren or siblings as a result of substance abuse or addiction.
Our next gathering will take place on Thursday, April 2, at 7:00 PM in Room 205 of the Carnevale Center. For more information you may contact Donna Andelora at dandelora@yahoo.com.

In 2013, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed the Human Trafficking Prevention, Protection and Treatment Act into law. The provisions of the law placed it and NJ in the first tier of effective state anti-trafficking laws in the nation. Progress has been made in identifying and prosecuting traffickers and those who purchase the services of the trafficked women and children. And now the trafficking victims are no longer criminalized but are given the assistance they need.

It is estimated that 100,000 underage girls and boys are sold for sex in America each year, many on classified advertising websites.

The current federal anti-trafficking law (The Trafficking Victims Protection Act) and other federal laws supersede state anti-trafficking laws. A loophole in federal laws allows websites to operate under less stringent regulations than the NJ law provisions for monitoring online ads and assuring that minors are not sold for sexual purposes. Some websites, such as Craigslist.com, have slowly worked to be compliant with the NJ law.

The same cannot be said for Backpage.com which is the single largest seller of underage girls and boys for sex. As each state moves to strengthen its anti-trafficking laws Backpage.com has vigorously fought certain provisions of state laws and won in court by citing the weaker federal laws. For example, Backpage has refused to use screening software that might detect ads for underage girls.
Now some brave minors are speaking out to reveal that they were sold for sex via Backpage ads and have found legal counsel to aid them in their fight against Backpage. We will keep you informed as their cases are heard in court and as we identify actions that we and you can take to support the children and help to end their sale for sex via online advertising.

If you would like additional information about how you can get involved with this effort please contact us at 973 653-9728 or Women's Rights Team

Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministry

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

Stephen Ministers are Christian caregivers who are compassionate, full of faith, skilled, trustworthy and Christ-centered. They submit an application and meet individually with the director to discuss a Stephen Minister’s role and commitment to engage in this area of our parish’s pastoral ministry. After over 50 hours of initial training, they have monthly continuing education and receive consistent support bi-monthly from peers at supervision. Stephen Ministers can also assist with finding community resources when needed. All relationships are same sex and completely confidential. If you need to release pain, talk through a pressing issue, need an ear to listen and support, consider calling for a Stephen Minister.

Operation Starfish
Operation Starfish
Operation Starfish

The tradition of Operation Starfish
continues as we reflect on the belief that alms-
giving isn’t about the size or amount of the gift; each gift—big or mall—is important!

A program that the whole family can participate in, Operation Starfish can teach our children about fasting, almsgiving and prayer and encourage them, and remind us, to offer some loose change at the end of each week.
Thank you for your generosity!

Become a Lay Franciscan
Lay Franciscans
Lay Franciscans
St. Francis welcomed lay people into the Franciscan family and wrote a rule from which they could draw inspiration and order for their Franciscan life. They were originally called Brothers and Sisters of Penance and later The Third Order.

For nearly 800 years, Lay Catholics have made a life commitment and become members of what is now called The Secular Franciscan Order [“secular” meaning we are embedded in the world]. There are some 15,000 Catholic Secular Franciscans in the U.S. and about 400,000 around the world.
Men and women of St. Mary’s fraternity of seculars meet
once a month, usually the second Tuesday - join us. All are
welcome!
