The Gospel of Mark
Tuesdays—7:30 - 9 PM
June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
Rooms 009 & 010, Carnevale Center

For the remainder of 2015, the Sunday Gospel reading will be
taken from the Gospel of Mark, which is generally regarded
to be the first of the four Gospels to have been written.
To help us listen more attentively to the Sunday Gospel reading
and apply it to our own lives, these five presentations will provide
an overview of the Gospel of Mark and its place among the NT
Gospels - followed by an examination of its main themes and
emphases.
Select passages will be read in detail to illustrate the key points
that the evangelist makes about Jesus and Christian discipleship.
This series will be presented by Paul D. Sansone, who studied
scripture at The Catholic University of America (Washington,
DC) and has been active in adult faith formation and education
for many years.

Did you know that there is a serious and pervasive problem with rape, sexual assault and harassment in the US military

Women's Rights Team
Did you know that there is a serious and pervasive problem with rape, sexual assault and harassment in the US military

The following are statistics from the 2014 Department of Defense Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Annual Report (SAPRO):
• 20,000 service members experienced at least one sexual assault during 2014: 1 in 20 women (4.9%) and 1 in 100 men (.9%).
• Over 3 in 5 women (62%) who reported a sexual assault experienced professional, social, or administrative retaliation or punishment. The majority of those who were retaliated against faced reprisal from superiors and commanders.
• Fewer than 1 in 5 victims openly reported their sexual assault. 3,678 service members reported the incident to law enforcement, out of a total 20,000 survivors.
This current issue needs our attention and action. As we did with the topic of equal pay last month, we ask you to do research, form opinions and identify possible action steps to fight the cited injustices.

Look at Protect Our Defenders web site at www.protectourdefenders.com Their mission states: We honor, support and give voice to the brave women and men in uniform who have been raped or sexually assaulted by fellow service members. We seek to fix the military training, investigation and adjudication systems related to sexual violence and harassment — systems that often re-victimize assault survivors by blaming them while failing to prosecute perpetrators.

While we could not find a specific related statement from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, we did find a timely and relevant article from U.S. Catholic magazine that offers a Catholic perspective on the issue. It can be read at http://bit.ly/1H0lD8k

As always, please contact us with your ideas, concerns or questions at  (973) 653-9728 or Women's Rights Team

2015 Annual Fund
Annual Fund
Annual Fund May the Lord give you peace!

This is the time of year when we kick off the St. Mary’s Annual Fund Drive. This drive is vital to the operation of the parish and it is critical for the capital needs of the parish. As you know we do a great deal of good work at St. Mary’s and all of that good work is due to your generosity. However, we count on the Annual Fund to close the budget gap. The Annual Fund helps us to accomplish the things that we might not otherwise be able to accomplish. Our goal this year is $325,000.   more...

If you would like to make a pledge or one-time payment to the Annual Fund through our eGiving program, Faith Direct, visit www.faithdirect.net

You do not need to have or open an account with Faith Direct to make a one-time payment to the Annual Fund.

Please use our parish code: NJ23.

Become a Lay Franciscan
Lay Franciscans
Lay Franciscans
St. Francis welcomed lay people into the Franciscan family and wrote a rule from which they could draw inspiration and order for their Franciscan life. They were originally called Brothers and Sisters of Penance and later The Third Order.

For nearly 800 years, Lay Catholics have made a life commitment and become members of what is now called The Secular Franciscan Order [“secular” meaning we are embedded in the world]. There are some 15,000 Catholic Secular Franciscans in the U.S. and about 400,000 around the world.
Men and women of St. Mary’s fraternity of seculars meet
once a month, usually the second Tuesday - join us. All are
welcome!
